Training - Nice to have or a Strategic Advantage?

Training Magazine, a national publication devoted to the training industry, named Verity Credit Union as one of the Top 125 training organizations in the United States. Tina had mentioned this in her blog on January 2nd. However yesterday we found out our official ranking. Are your ready for it...

Verity’s official ranking was 101st, ahead of such companies as IKEA, MasterCard Worldwide, and MetLife. In fact, Verity was one of only three credit unions named to this coveted list. Two of them happen to be in Washington State, which I think is pretty cool.

In the most recent issue of Training Magazine Verity is featured in an article naming and briefly describing the Top 125 training organizations. A nice feeling when you are included with such companies as Starbucks and the Ritz-Carlton (who received first place). Check out the rankings of all the companies that made this coveted list.

One of our vision statements is to be considered one of the Top 10 places to work. Since I am involved in training I have an obvious bias in the importance of receiving this recognition. It truly excites me! However I am interested in what you think. Does receiving national recognition like this help propel us towards being a Top 10 organization to work for?

Yes, it does. Congratulations on your well earned honor. It was good to see four credit unions on the list. Hey, 3% is not bad when you look at the lofty competition and the list of impressive winners.

Thank you for the comment Doug! I agree that it is nice to see some credit unions on this list, especially when you look at the size of some of these organizations (and their budgets).

Good for you -- us too! I work for Washington State Employees Credit Union and we made the top 100 list as well. CU's do this stuff really well.

Washington State Employees does a great job of providing their employee's with outstanding training programs. This is evident from their inclusion on the Top 125 list the past two years (I'm not sure about before then, so it could even be a longer run). It really is great that credit unions are getting recognized for their commitment to developing quality staff to serve their members. Thanks for the post Ann.

Look at the range of what we ask our tellers, our MSO's and our call center reps to do -- it's really quite astonishing. And things can change on a dime. When the phishers found credit unions in the second half of 2006, they hit us hard. Employees have to be financial experts, security experts, relationship experts, on and on. We also have to be able to turn on a dime and quickly be trained and ready to respond to the latest and not-so-greatest scams, frauds, and otherwise unsavory elements of financial services. CU's have to do all this training in a decentralized environment. WSECU's training dept. continually tries to come up with new ways to keep things fresh and cover the bases ("training in a box" comes to mind where they send out kits to each department, usually with a fun game element to help keep employees engaged.) Thanks for the kudos and the blog.

Congratulations, Verity! My credit union - FORUM - made Top 125 list this year also. Tina and Justin, I had the privilege of meeting both of you at ELL last year and was very impressed with you and your organization. We're proud to have joined you and Washington State on the list.
